We are pleased to share the publication of Deliverable 3.4.1 – European Framework on Design Education for EDI. This deliverable defines a shared European teaching framework to support the integration of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into design education across Higher Education Institutions.

The deliverable is available in five languages: English, Italian, Polish, Slovak and Spanish.

WP3 Lead: STU – Slovak University of Technology in BratislavaDeveloped in collaboration with: UNICH – “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, ASP – Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice, ELISAVA – Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, UNIFI – University of Florence, and EIDD – Design for All Europe.

What the deliverable covers

D3.4.1 provides a European reference framework for teaching and learning practices on Design for EDI. In particular, it includes:

  • Teaching methodologies and supervision strategies, supporting teachers in structuring EDI-oriented learning experiences in both physical and digital learning environments.

  • Modules for different design fields and EDI levels, covering System Design, Industrial Design, Architecture and Urban Design, Product Design, and Digital / Interaction Design.

  • Themed contents, lectures and seminars, offering structured educational materials that can be adapted to different higher education contexts.

  • Learning objectives, learning outcomes and assessment approaches, helping teachers define what students should know, understand and be able to do at the end of each module.

  • References, tools and assessment matrices, supporting the development, evaluation and transferability of Design for EDI teaching practices.

How this supports WP3

D3.4.1 contributes directly to WP3 – Development of an EU Teaching Framework on Design for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. WP3 aims to provide a common European framework that can guide Higher Education Institutions, teachers and learners in embedding EDI principles into design curricula.

The Framework supports a progressive approach to Design for EDI, from introductory contents to advanced design studios and professional practice. It also promotes experiential, participatory and reflective teaching methods, with attention to real-world collaboration, stakeholder engagement, co-design, prototyping, assessment and social impact.

By defining shared modules, strategies and assessment tools, D3.4.1 provides a foundation for making Design for EDI more accessible, transferable and applicable across different European design education contexts.

A Working Group workshop to share open-access tools and resources for teaching Design for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

On 7 May 2026, the EDIDesK project took part in Cumulus Athens 2026 with the Working Group workshop “From Roots to Routes: Establishing a Shared Knowledge on Design for EDI through Open-Access Content and Tools”, hosted at the University of West Attica, Athens, Greece.

The workshop focused on one of the key challenges in contemporary design education: how to introduce Equality, Diversity and Inclusion - EDI into Design Studies through unbiased content, shared teaching and learning protocols, and open educational resources.

During the session, the EDIDesK team presented the main project outcomes developed across WP2, WP3 and WP4, with particular attention to the EU Framework for Teaching Design for EDI and the EDIDesK Digital Teaching and Learning Platform. The platform is conceived as an open-access environment where educators, researchers, students and contributors can search, explore, adopt, reuse and contribute teaching resources on Design for EDI.

The workshop combined short presentations, guided demonstrations, a live demo of the platform, open Q&A and structured feedback moments. Participants were invited to share their perspectives on how EDIDesK resources could support teaching innovation, curriculum development and inclusive design education within the Cumulus community.

The session was chaired and coordinated by Emilio Rossi (UNICH) and Alessia Brischetto (UNIFI).

Speakers included Marta Więckowska (ASP), Zuzana Čerešňová (STU), Ainoa Abella Garcia (ELISAVA) and Cristina González Avendaño (ELISAVA).

The workshop represented an important opportunity to share the EDIDesK project results with an international academic community and to open new conversations around inclusive, accessible and open approaches to design education.

Time: 17:30–19:30 local time in Athens - EEST (UTC+3)

Hybrid format: Online + Moschato Campus, University of West Attica, Athens, Greece

"From Roots to Routes" is a workshop promoted by the EDIDesK project (Open Access Contents on Design for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion for Higher Education Programmes), funded by the Erasmus+ Programme (KA220-HED). The workshop addresses a key challenge in Design Education – introducing EDI in Design Studies through unbiased content and shared teaching and learning protocols – and showcases EDIDesK’s main results: 1. the "EU Framework for teaching Design for EDI" and 2. the "EDIDesK digital teaching and learning platform", an open-access platform where teaching resources can be searched, explored, adopted, reused, and contributed. The format chosed for the workshop combines short introductions, guided demonstrations, interactive live demos, along with open Q&A sessions record participants’ priorities for adoption and contribution.
